But does your build even make sense? Who knows. Want to level up? You need to choose which class to level up, select new powers, and distribute stat points. The world is pleasant enough to explore (I love the number of critters hanging around) and it’s nice for once to be just a random fantasy adventurer instead of a hero.īut all too often, the DM interrupts my wanderings with new draconian rules. The time limit is generous, but it gives me anxiety nevertheless, and I sadly try to limit my detours. In this early part of the story, I need to reclaim the place before rival mercenaries do it first. I like to explore pretty locations while trying to not think too hard about the time limit hanging over my head. I like travelling the world map, discovering new routes and trying to avoid the random events. I can play without dying too much, but I know I’m missing half of the fun.īecause I am having fun, after all. Another part feels like the DM is treating me like a child, telling me “this is too complex for you” instead of properly explaining how to play. Even the more technical parts of the game, like levelling up the characters, can be fully automated.Ī part of me is grateful. They let me tweak various rules, such as deciding how strong the enemies will be (anything over “normal” is an exercise in masochism), choosing how often the game will auto-pause, and even allowing me to disable death. Unless we count the options menu as part of the DM’s duties, in which case they are a generous being. But the spirit that governs Pathfinder: Kingmaker is incapable of showing such mercy. They are able to assess in real time whether throwing another casual encounter, or killing that limping party member, would be a fun challenge or just an act of cruelty. In a tabletop campaign, DMs use their storytelling skills as much as their rulebooks. Virtual dice rolls govern every action I take, and the results get quickly buried in the combat log. The initial fights aren’t difficult, but as my party grows larger and the fights more intense, it becomes harder to understand if the fight is going badly because my strategy is wrong, or because of some unlucky rolls. The tutorial leaves me with a ragtag team of classic fantasy tropes, a list of villains to kick, and a large time limit (this is an RPG where many quests are given a countdown, with negative consequences if you fail to finish them in time, rather than allowing you to ignore impending doom in favour of fishing).īattles occur in real time, but at any point I can pause the game to give orders to my party. Before ruling the lands, though, I have to reclaim them from ancient curses and vicious bandits. The main appeal of the Pathfinder campaign is the opportunity to rule your own little kingdom. I am going to get my own kingdom, after all. Dazzled by too many possibilities, I decided to model my character after Griffith from the Berserk manga. Still, the game feels overwhelming, and this feeling never truly goes away. I’m glad I played a bit of D&D before, or I would be utterly lost. It tries to answer my questions, but every new tooltip is as dense as a brick. They are simply so enmeshed in the Pathfinder world, so familiar with its rules, they can’t see why concepts that feel natural to them could also be confusing for new players. One thing is certain: this DM is not good at dealing with newcomers. The game immediately lends me a character sheet and tells me to make a character. But while I have a passing acquaintance with this ruleset, I don’t know what kind of storyteller will guide me through my adventure. After all, the game is a close adaptation of a renowned D&D campaign. It’s just a matter of finding a group of people who like the same things you like.īooting up Pathfinder: Kingmaker feels like starting a new tabletop campaign with strangers. There isn’t a right or wrong way of playing. Some have a very strict plotline to follow, while others start with vague ideas and let the players wander around. Some focus on combat, and some enjoy drama. ANYWAY, my point is that in a game of Dungeons & Dragons, some DMs like to follow the rules by the book, others just use rules as a frame to tell a story. You have to make sure you like your companions, but most importantly, you and the Dungeon Master must share the same vision. Starting a new tabletop RPG campaign is a bit like joining an complicated polyamorous relationship. But there are other software packages that work well too, no one thing will work great for everyone. I've actually had good luck with CrashPlan in that respect, had to do a restore a couple of years ago, and it worked great. That is why it is recommended that users of home backup software verify they can restore data as well. That is why companies pay people to make sure that the (a) backups are working (according to the backup software) and (b) make sure they are really working by actually restoring data and verifying the application actually works. Such stories from IT admins and prosumers does not inspire much confidence in me.īecause backup software is fickle and can break at the drop of a hat. The esteemed Synology brand, seem to have horror stories of backups failing on them because of A quick sleuth on the internet reveals that, even owners have Yet, most NAS users seem to use the software thatĬomes with their NAS. Typically, as a rule of thumb, hardware manufacturersĪre not great at making software. Their NAS as opposed to using 3rd party backup software? How comes so many people use the backup software that comes with I got confused because hestermofet did report a problem with Time Machine in my second Retrospect thread. P.S.: Corrected last sentence in second paragraph hestermofet was not specifically involved in revealing/confirming the second Time Machine bug mentioned in the first paragraph. But at a minimum you should always have two Time Machine disks you alternate regularly between." It's great for convenience when it works. That is why ClarkGoble says, as quoted in the post linked to in the first paragraph of this post, "This is why I never recommend Time Machine being your primary backup. The second bug was revealed by Flawed in another thread, and was confirmed by ClarkGoble. The first of the two Time Machine bugs (the one that's existed for 7 years) mentioned in the paragraph above was revealed by rationull (actually I think I discovered rationull's discovery in another thread and spread the word) in the course of the heated discussion. When I originally announced that decision, I was met with a storm of abuse by other Mac Ach posters urging me to use Time Machine or CrashPlan instead. I originally decided to use Retrospect in June 2015 because it was the only backup app that fit my somewhat peculiar needs. The tl dr version is that Time Machine has at least two known bugs, one supposedly fixed in OS X 10.11 and one that still exists in OS X 10.11.2, and that-because of the long-standing nature of these bugs (the first one goes back 7 years) and the millions of Mac users affected-IMHO Tim Cook would be a fool to ever allow Apple to announce that these bugs existed and have been fixed.Ī bit of full disclosure: Most regular readers of the Mac Ach know that I've been pushing the fancy backup app Retrospect for 17 months. Komatsu, if you're thinking of using Time Machine as your primary backup software, you'd better read this post first. Let applications use a standard set of write calls, and the OS/drivers sort out how to actually accomplish it. That's what the whole filesystem abstraction layers are for. There may be quirks sometimes, but as long as it's not trying to do anything too fancy it should Just Work(tm) fine. But WiFi is not a fundamentally reliable physical layer, but it is convenient.Īnd if you have it mounted as an SMB/iSCSI drive on your desktop, it just simply treats it as another filesystem to write to. Over WiFi, you may run into cases where it's significantly slower than USB2.0, or you get random disconnections. So in terms of reliability, should be just fine (again, not over WiFi). It's slower than direct-attach USB3.x/Thunderbolt. You're local network (assuming no WiFi) is pretty reliable. I'd recommend whatever backup software you use just treats the NAS as a storage deviceįor example, most desktop backup applications are designed to work on local drives or Use epic weapons and devastating warmachines to battle against screen filling bosses and hordes of enemies! The framework of building the matrix can be done in 3 steps: How To Create a Risk Assessment MatrixĪll assessments that are done to build a matrix should be done by the person that is most competent through their knowledge of the project and their ability to perform the proper analysis necessary to identify each risk. It is also important to develop a matrix when there is a known hazard that has occurred. If there is new information that is presented about a task, this would be an ideal time for you to determine the risks of applying that information. It is best utilized before a team makes any changes in the the process of completing a task or if there is a new task altogether. Using the risk assessment matrix finds itself beneficial for your project management team when it comes to implementing any changes within a project. Having a visual understanding of these factors contributes to the confidence that stakeholders will have in going further in execution. It also allows for members of the team and its stakeholders to have a visual of all of the factors and their ability to affect a project’s outcome. The benefits of having a risk matrix is that it essentially allows for the risk within a project to be calculated faster so that a project management team can prioritize which problems they would need to take action in addressing. This matrix specifies combinations of probability and impact that allow individual project risks to be divided into priority groups”. In A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge a risk matrix would be described as “a grid for mapping the probability of each risk occurrence and its impact on project objectives if that risk occurs. A risk matrix, also known as a Probability and Impact Matrix, is a tool that is best utilized to assist project managers execute a risk evaluation or determine the probability of a potential risk occurring. Then gradually the visuals come online and this informs the instrumentation. So this process is kind of how I map out exactly what I’m going to write. All of the music changes are tied to events, both large and small, that the game tracks while you are playing the game. This informs how I’ll structure the music on both a macro and micro level as I’m generally looking for places where I can change the music. I learn about the gameplay mechanics, how Ori moves, the abilities, and the general level design. In the case of Ori, I have access to the game from early on. As a general rule though I ask for as much access as I can be given (security varies highly between projects!) and then consult with the audio director / music supervisor, if there is one as to what is required. A scripted narrative game is very different from an open-world narrative game, and so on. An approach to score a multiplayer title is potentially very different to a single player narrative game. It depends per project because my workflow is based entirely on how much access I have, and the genre of game. So, these days the only time I’m recording at home is if I’ve got a new instrument, such as the lyre I imported from Greece for a new project.Ĭan you describe how you approach your workflow? Especially when it comes to scoring for games? I am setup to record from home, but we’re in 2020 now, and most musicians have gotten up to speed with capabilities to record from their homes and have the setups exactly as they like them, so I take advantage of that, especially when conceptually it’s nice to be able to just drop in live stuff every now and then without having to wait for a player to come over. I definitely admire the people who have massive setups with everything at the ready from the get go. On a big project, the template gets built as I go and so while it takes longer to get started, when it gets to the end, I can really put my foot down without having to hunt through hundreds of patches because I know everything I want is probably going to be close by. I don’t run a standard generic template with hundreds of tracks on startup, I personally find that very intimidating. I do have one small (and portable) 15” screen that I really just use for video playback (or internet!). I just found that having multiple screens on left and right was not good ergonomically for me. Anything smaller and you need the magnifying glass. I have one 42” 4K monitor which might sound nuts, but at that size, you’re able to take full advantage of the screen without having to use resolution scaling. I stopped using multiple screens years ago. I’m in the process of transitioning everything over to M2 drives, but currently my samples are spread out over 3 M2 drives, and 4 SSDs, with an additional drive for system only, an additional drive for projects, and an additional drive for cloud storage, for which I’m primarily using Box, and Dropbox. I’m running one PC, using either a customised version of Reaper, or for legacy reasons, Cakewalk Sonar. We’ll be here all day if I go through my record collection! In no particular order, Mychael Danna, Jesper Kyd, James Horner, Hybrid, Yoko Kanno, Led Zeppelin, Alan Silvestri, M83, Jóhann Jóhannsson. That said, I do have some go to artists that I like listening to in downtime. I just think it’s important to try and keep an open mind. I’m generally not listening to other soundtracks when searching for inspiration for my own work, just on the lookout for things that grab my attention, it can be a cool rhythm, a new instrument, even in genres of music I wouldn’t normally choose to listen to. One can often end up in YouTube/Spotify black holes but you find some interesting things along the way. I often start with an artist I like and then just see where the algorithm takes me. YouTube - Related Videos, and Spotify - Related Artists! These two features alone are incredibly useful for finding inspiration. Where do you find your inspiration? Can you share any particular music or artists that influence you? It was from that point I started building the groundwork necessary to being a composer, doing as many projects as I could whether it be library music, commercials, games or films. I then worked and travelled for 3 years, teaching English in Japan before going to the University of Southern California’s film scoring program in 2009. At the time they had a Media and Applied Music course (which has since been amalgamated into the composition program) that I studied on for 4 years. The idea of music as a career wasn’t something I thought about until it was recommended to me by a teacher at school that I apply to music university - the Royal Academy of Music being where I ended up. Can you share your musical journey with us? When did you first start scoring to picture? The supply chains for these materials stretch around the world to places like Indonesia, the Philippines and China. Numerous resources, materials and parts go into smartphone manufacturing, including rare earth metals (e.g., lithium), tin, glass and plastics. Phones are composed of many pieces created in multiple steps, and each step consumes water. Their water footprint comes from the virtual water associated with their manufacturing – what’s known as the “ grey water footprint.” How Much Virtual Water is in a Smart Phone? Grey Water Footprint: The amount of freshwater required to dilute the wastewater generated in manufacturing, in order to maintain water quality, as determined by state and local standards. Green Water Footprint: The amount of rainwater required (evaporated or used directly) to make an item. The Water Footprint Network (whose research provides some of the data used in the WFC) defines these components as:īlue Water Footprint: The amount of surface water and groundwater required (evaporated or used directly) to produce an item. SOURCES: Berger et al Water Footprint Network, “Water footprints of nations” Friends of the Earth/Trucost WFN, “The water footprint of cotton consumption” WFN, “The water footprint of wood for lumber, pulp, paper, fuel and firewood” Water Footprint of Common Consumer Items. The water footprint of a product is calculated by adding up all of the water required for each step of the production process. Table 1 lists a sampling of water footprints for the manufacturing of some common consumer goods. Hidden water is water that is not felt or seen and it is required for almost every step in the production processes for many raw materials and finished products. Hidden Water: How the Water Footprints of Consumer Goods are Calculated Knowing how much water it takes to make the raw materials and products we all use and consume is an important first step towards water conservation and using water more productively. Manufacturing everyday materials like paper, plastic, metal and fabric takes water – a lot of it. It may not be visible, but millions of gallons of virtual water go into making the consumer goods Americans buy, use and throw away. Hidden water is an important part of water use. I was wondering whether I should do that eventually because as you can see in the Element configuration dialog on Nextcloud, you can make Element use your own private Jitsi service as well. I did not try setting up my own homeserver yet. I am happy with the Element app on Nextcloud, it allows me to talk to people in the Slackware Matrix room but also to connect to the Libera.Chat IRC network through a Matrix bridge. Worth mentioning: both and Rocket.chat offer seamless integration of the Jitsi collaboration platform which is also covered in great detail in my article series. Element can connect to existing servers out there, or you can setup a Matrix server yourself.Īnd then there is an alpha-quality app to integrate Rocket.chat into Nextcloud but it is not advised to install that on anything else than a testing environment. How well do these two integrate with Nextcloud? On my own cloud server (based on the Nextcloud platform) I installed Element for Nextcloud, which is an app to use the web client called Element (formerly riot.chat). These two also use federation to connect to other instances of their own product but on top of that, these servers offer bridges to a whole lot of other communication platforms, such as Teams, WhatsApp, IRC, Slack etc. is built with the Meteor JavaScript platform. Two popular platforms exist which use completely different protocols: is built on top of its own Matrix open standard and Rocket.chat. What if you wanted to collaborate with people on other networks, say, other clouds? In the past I would be quick to point to XMPP server solutions like Jabber but those seem to be disappearing. The Jitsi Meet stack contains an internal XMPP communication server and Nextcloud collabration apps can only connect to user accounts on other Nextcloud server instances (through a process called federation). I am considering an additional article to my Slackware Cloud Server series.Īs I showed in that series, a Nextcloud server can be equipped with capable text, voice and video communication apps but they are self-contained.
